Laser printers are a strong choice if you print often. Their toner does not dry out like inkjet ink, and text stays sharp. The purchase price tells only part of the story, so look at running costs as well.
Monochrome or color?
- Monochrome: ideal for documents, usually with lower costs per page.
- Color: useful for charts and marketing materials, but consumables cost more. Most are not the best choice for photos.
Calculate your cost per page
Divide the price of a toner cartridge by its rated page yield. Check whether the printer comes with a low-capacity starter cartridge, and compare high-yield replacements. Also ask about drums, which may be replaced separately.
Match it to your volume
Look at the recommended monthly page volume, not the higher maximum duty cycle. Choosing a printer that suits your workload helps it last.
Features worth having
- Automatic duplex: saves paper.
- Automatic document feeder: useful for scanning multi-page documents on an all-in-one.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, AirPrint and Mopria.
- Paper tray size: matters in a busy office.
Watch out for
- Subscription toner plans, and firmware that limits third-party cartridges. Read the terms.
- Printer size and weight, which can be larger than expected.
- Heat, noise and ventilation in small spaces.
