Concrete offers no cushioning, so an ordinary thin mat can leave knees and wrists sore. Choose a mat that balances comfort with stability.

Thickness

  • 3 to 5 mm: stable, but may feel hard on concrete.
  • 6 to 8 mm: a good balance for most people on hard floors.
  • 10 mm or more: very cushioned, but can feel unstable in balance poses.

Density matters

A dense mat supports you better than a thick, soft one. If you press down with your knee and feel the floor, it lacks support.

Material

  • Natural rubber: strong grip and good density, but heavy. Avoid it if you have a latex allergy.
  • TPE: light and comfortable, though it may wear sooner.
  • PVC: durable and affordable, but less eco-friendly.
  • Cork: grippy when damp, and pleasant to touch.

Grip on concrete

Polished concrete can be smooth, and dusty floors are slippery. Sweep first, and choose a mat with a textured underside. A non-slip rug pad underneath can help.

Make the space more comfortable

  • Lay interlocking foam tiles or a low-pile rug under the mat. Check that it stays firm.
  • Use a folded blanket or a knee pad for kneeling poses.
  • In a cold garage or basement, a rug helps insulate you.

Care

Concrete is abrasive, so clean the underside of the mat regularly. Store it away from damp floors.
