A Fire TV Stick is a small streaming device from Amazon that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port. It connects to Wi-Fi and gives you apps such as Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube, along with a voice remote. It can give an older TV a modern smart interface.
What you need
- A TV with a free HDMI port.
- A Wi-Fi network with a reliable signal at the TV.
- An Amazon account.
- A power outlet, since the stick generally needs its own power adapter.
- Paid subscriptions for the services that charge for them.
Match the stick to your TV
This is the main decision. If your TV is 1080p, you will not see any resolution benefit from a 4K stick, although you may still prefer a faster model. If your TV is 4K, choose a 4K stick and check that it supports the HDR formats your TV uses.
Also check that the TV’s HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2 or later, which is needed for most 4K streaming. On some TVs, only certain ports do.
Look at Wi-Fi and speed
Streaming 4K needs a steady connection, and the TV’s location matters. Higher-end sticks usually have newer Wi-Fi and faster processors, which makes menus quicker. If your router is far away, see our guide to better Wi-Fi coverage.
Things to know before buying
- The home screen promotes content and includes advertising.
- The interface favors Amazon’s services, so check that the apps you use are available.
- A tight space behind the TV may call for a short HDMI extender.
Is it right for you?
If you are already an Alexa or Prime household, it fits well. If your home is built around Apple or Google services, compare the equivalent devices from those ecosystems first. Check Amazon’s current lineup, because model names and features change.
