Blue light blocking glasses are often sold as a cure for tired eyes and poor sleep. The evidence behind those claims is weaker than the marketing suggests.

What the research says

A 2023 Cochrane review found that blue-light filtering spectacle lenses probably make little or no difference to eye strain from computer use in the short term. Evidence about their effect on sleep was uncertain. The American Academy of Ophthalmology also does not recommend special glasses for computer use, and it says the light from screens has not been shown to damage eyes.

What causes digital eye strain?

Discomfort after screen use is usually related to how we use screens, not the color of the light. We blink less when we concentrate, which dries the eyes. Long periods of close focus, glare and a poor desk setup also contribute.

What helps instead

  • The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Screen position: keep it about an arm’s length away, with the top near eye level.
  • Brightness: match your screen to the room, and reduce glare.
  • Blink more: use artificial tears if your eyes are dry.
  • Check your prescription: uncorrected vision can cause strain.

What about sleep?

Bright light late at night can affect your sleep. Night mode settings may help a little, but putting screens away before bed is likely to help more.

If you have persistent eye pain or vision changes, see an eye care professional. For a better desk setup, see our Home Office guides.
