Ring is one of the best-known video doorbell brands, and it sells several models at different prices. The right one depends less on the camera specifications than on your door, your wiring and whether you are willing to pay a subscription.
Battery or wired?
- Battery models are simple to fit and suit renters, but the battery needs recharging and very cold weather can shorten its life.
- Wired models connect to existing doorbell wiring or a plug-in adapter. You never need to recharge them, but you must check your transformer’s voltage first.
If your work involves household wiring and you are not confident, use a licensed electrician.
Understand the subscription
This is the most important question. Without a paid Ring plan you can generally get alerts and live view, but saved video history requires a subscription. Check Ring’s current plan details and factor the annual cost into your comparison, because it applies for as long as you own the device.
Check your Wi-Fi at the door
A doorbell sits outside, often behind brick or metal. Test the signal on your phone at the door before you buy. If it is weak, video will suffer whichever model you choose. Our router coverage guide explains what helps.
Think about the view
Consider where you need to see. A wide vertical view helps with packages left on the ground, while a recessed or side-facing door may need an angled mount. Check the field of view in the specifications.
Consider privacy and neighbors
- Review the app’s privacy settings and motion zones.
- Avoid pointing the camera at a neighbor’s property.
- Check local laws on audio recording, and your lease or HOA rules if they apply.
Works best with Alexa
Ring is owned by Amazon, so it fits most naturally with Alexa devices. If your home runs on Google Home or Apple Home, check compatibility before you commit. Our Smart Home Compatibility Checker lists the questions to ask, and our Blink vs. Ring comparison covers the closest alternative.
