Romanticism was an art movement that emerged during the mid 18th or early 19th century. Romanticism can be defined as an opposition to classism and neoclassicism. Where harmony, calm colors, balanced compositions, and accurate divisions were much more important than human feelings, emotions, and expressions.

Romanticism gave a break to perfection and followed their imagination. Romantic artists were not falling much for rationality. Moreover, the principles of enlightenment, where behind every action there should be a rational reason. Romanticism was a turn towards sensitivity from subjectivity.

What Is Romanticism In Art?

The Romanticism in art was about loving and depicting nature instead of depicting Allegorical and biblical themes and scenes. The Artist was taking inspiration from nature and natural scenes in the landscape. The artists like John Constable and W Turner focused on nature’s beauty and it’s beautiful depiction. A few printmakers also showed their spark and talen with their very narrative and expression filled prints.

In Romantic Art the brilliant scene depiction and maritime paintings were in full bloom. Thomas Bewick and Samuel Palmer were remarkable printmakers who adopted nature as their subject matter.

Romanticism art was about portraying the beauty of nature along with its strength, power, and ability to construct or destroy. Romanticism said Goodbye to the Enlightenment Era and welcomed the scope of individuals and their feelings.

  • The romanticism paintings just like the poetry of William Wordsworth were spontaneous overflow of feelings and emotions.
  • Romantic Art emphasized on portraying the emotional and intense scenes.
  • Some British Artists took the brave step of painting some bold and wild landscapes along with aggressive weather like strom and rains.
  • The Landscape Size increased massively and the figures were added along with the landscape setting.
  • The Romanticism art movement allowed the artist with more freedom and more individualistic style. There was no theme restriction even the artist personally can be his subject matter.
  • Before Romanticism the Art work as much close to classical works was more valuable, but from Romantic times this trend changed. The Original work was more valuable and this trend kept on growing till date.
  • The dramatic depiction was another important characteristic of Romanticism. As the artist not only used to choose the dramatic themes they also portrayed it in full action.
  • Where the previous era of enlightenment was completely related to social issues and their depiction. Romanticism was much concerned with individual expressions
  • Emotion provoking content was also in trend.
  • Romanticism was an escape from industrial mechanisms to the beauty of nature. Moreover, the peace and calmness nature can bring to the human mind and soul.
  • Medieval themes were also being painted but with the additional individual expressions and human viewpoints.
  • As in Romantic art the emphasis was on emotions so how they can miss the most powerful of emotions Fear And darkness. These emotions were effectively painted in many Romantic Art works.
  • The Artist didn’t mind to portray even the harshest and bitter emotions of sorrow and unpleasantness. The Raft Of Medusa scene painted after the wreck of the ship is a clear example. 
  • Mythical heroes were also painted with bold expressions and full zenith. Liberty leading the masses as a mythical French heroic character is the perfect example painted by Eugene Delocroix.
  • Political Propaganda work was also a major characteristic of Romantic Art Movement as some works were designed to please the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
