Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai are both officials within the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, who were working for them at the time of Robert Levinson’s disappearance.
Levinson, who had retired from the FBI, was taken from Kish Island, Iran, on March 9, 2007. The U.S. government has previously identified and sanctioned Baseri and Khazai in connection with the case. The FBI’s announcement shows its continued efforts to solve the case.
The FBI has offered up to $5 million for any information that can lead to the location or recovery of Levinson. The State Department is offering up to $20 million in rewards.
The FBI continues with its investigation and has received several new leads and intelligence. According to Sanjay Virmani, a special agent in charge of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, the agency will continue to work to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
In 2020, Levinson’s family stated that they thought he was dead based on information received from U.S. officials. Levinson disappeared after traveling to Iran in 2007 and was never seen or heard from again. Although Iranian officials initially denied having any knowledge of Levinson, the United Nations said in 2019 that Iran’s Justice Department had acknowledged an ongoing case regarding him.
